RAND Study Says TV Influences Teens Sexual Drive
A Randy Study concluded with findings that teenagers that watch more television with sexual inuendo are more likely to engage in sexual acts. There are some factors in play that raise questions to the results. Rebecca Collins conducted the study.
USA Today report that teenagers that are seeking to become sexually active may be turning to television out of curiosity or perhaps to learn something.
Excerpt 1:"It's social learning: 'monkey see, monkey do,' " [Rebecca] Collins says. "If everyone's talking about sex or having it, and something bad hardly ever comes out of it, because it doesn't on TV, then they think, 'Hey, the whole world's doing it, and I need to.' "
Excerpt 2:The study didn't take into account a teen's interest in sex or feelings of sexual readiness as the year began. So the findings might exaggerate TV's influence in causing kids to start sex, says adolescent psychologist Joseph Allen of the University of Virginia.

- Sex is pervasive on TV, present in about two-thirds of all shows other than news and sports, and teens watch an average of three hours daily, previous research has shown.
- Studies show that about 3 of 5 teens have TVs in their bedrooms.
